Locating the site for the ICELINK borehole

02 June 2025 – The ICELINK borehole on Vatnajökull needs to be drilled at a location with only ice and no subglacial water structures along its length. To find this location, an ice penetrating survey was executed at the ice divide between the main outlet glaciers of the ice cap. A radio signal is transmitted into the ice where it is reflected back to the receiver. The received signal gives information on the ice structure and the presence/absence of subglacial water. The transmitter and receiver are attached behind a snow scooter. Eyjólfur Magnússon has been driving the snow scooter back and forth across the survey area and keeping a close eye on the instruments.
