GC-Net field season wraps up

24 June 2024 – GEUS’ mini-team is on their way back from two weeks of servicing high-Arctic weather stations from the GC-NET (Greenland Climate Network). Thanks to the efforts of Nanna B. Karlsson, Anne Solgaard, Chris Shields and Chris Derksen scientists can enjoy real-time climate data for yet another year. Challenging – but extremely important work.

One of their visits was to the EastGrip camp on top of the ice sheet in the far north. This well-equipped camp takes care of many researchers every year working on the ice sheet. It has a chef, and the GEUS team joyfully reports that there was even an indoor toilet. Who could ask for more?

Despite having completed their task flawlessly and with flying colours, we suspect back home that they might have gone a bit stir-crazy, in the best possible way. In addition to battling technical issues, weather, and bureaucracy, rumour has it they’ve also acquired new skills in estimating hand volume, mastering obscure music trivia, and perfecting the proper way to eat Icelandic dried fish.

All fun aside – the data they’ve collected and secured will feed into climate models, support ongoing research on ice sheet dynamics, and help scientists around the world better understand and predict changes in the Arctic climate system.
